Chrysanthemum represents the royal family in Japan. It is used as the design on the buttons for the members of parliament as well as on the cover of Japanese passports. It is considered as a noble flower and used at special events. Wagashi that resemble the seasonal flowers are often served at tea ceremony. This season, it is the chrysanthemum. Green Tea and Wagashi Delights in Tokyo   We welcomed two American ladies from Missouri today. They are both colleagues and friends. They especially enjoyed trying their own hand at preparing a bowl of matcha tea for each other at the end of the tea ceremony. “Terrible!” They joked at each other’s tea while still finishing their entire bowls. Crawling into the tea room through a tiny entrance space as well as sitting upright straight in Japanese way must have been a bit of a challenge for our foreign guests. This summer season, guests can choose two themes from fireworks, rose, sunflower or Nadeshiko (a Pink). The instructor will walk you through step by step to create these beautiful pieces. Green Tea and Wagashi Delights in Tokyo Cherry trees are getting ready to bloom very soon. In a couple of weeks, we’ll be enjoying the flowers along the park that leads us to our tea instructor’s house in Toritsudaigaku. We had a mother and two daughters at our casual tea ceremony workshop today. They are from Salt Lake City, Utah (USA). The daughters tried sitting in the Japanese formal way, which even we Japanese have hard time doing. Green Tea and Wagashi Delights in Tokyo   It is still cold but there is a hint of spring in the air. We had two couples at our tea ceremony workshop yesterday at Toritsu-daigaku. One couple is from India and another from Italy. The tea bowls, utensils and the setup of the tea room had the theme of spring. Some of the tea bowls had motifs of the girls festival “hinamatsuri”.
